Pure Water in no Time During a Disaster
This is a Life Saver “Must Have”

Building a homemade Pure Water Filetr is a "MUST" for you and your family.During a disaster water is the most valuable commodity, for you can only live a few days without water and drinking unpure water will make you very ill and can "KILL". This project was exceedingly simple

All you need is:

2 Food Grade (very important) HDPE buckets and matching lids. Use 6 gallon buckets.

2 Berkey Black filters. I paid $107.00 for 2 plus shipping and handling for these. They are available from most distributors for a similar price.

1 Plastic water spigot. Aquire from the same place as the filters. About $39.00 for this at Berkley

Electric drill with 3/4? wood bit and a 7/16? bit.

First drill a hole for the tap in what will be the lower bucket with the 3/4 inch wood spade bit. Use a wood spade bit . Mount the tap about an inch above the bottom of the bucket so that you do not have to have the spigot hang over a counters edge. This is what the spigot mounted looks like:

Next, drill two holes in the bottom of what is the upper bucket with the 7/16? bit. These holes are the mounting holes for the Berkey filters. This is what the filters look like when mounted in the bottom of the upper bucket:

Before mounting the filters in the picture above, Place the upper bucket on top of the lower buckets lid and marked both holes with a Sharpie on the lower buckets lid. Mark a reference point on the upper bucket/lower buckets lid where they line up. Then drill two holes at the marks on the lower buckets lid. Use the 3/4? bit to allow for any slight variance. This is what it looks like when completed:

Then mount the Berkey filters. These filters have a foam gasket that sits on the bottom of the filter and you simply drop the filter (or candle in filter speak) through the hole you drilled and screw on the plastic wingnut like nut. This is what the bottom of the upper bucket looks like when ready to drop onto the lower bucket:

Note: Important soak the filters in water before installing and using. Then just fill the top bucket with water and wait till bottom one is full—-then drink–Walla Pure Water.

To recap:

Drill 3/4? hole for spigot and attach spigot in lower bucket.

Drill two 7/16? holes in upper bucket. Place upper bucket on lower buckets lid and mark location of holes onto lower bucket lid. Mark a vertical index on lower lid and upper bucket to help line buckets up.

Drill the marked spots on lower buckets lid with 3/4? bit.

Attach filters to upper bucket.

Drop upper bucket onto lower bucket with lid snapped on to lower bucket. Use the index lines to match up the buckets.

Fill upper bucket with water. Filtered water flow via gravity into lower bucket.

The finished product looks like this: (Note index marks where buckets meet; this indicates the holes are lined up correctly)
